Blog Post 6:

Living through their screens (how the epidemic is affected by our digital age):

The internet has been integrated into every part of our lives whether it be entertainment, gathering information, or connecting with others across the globe. However, the constant integration of the internet into our lives has impacted our society to a stage of addiction because of the chokehold it holds on everyone.

Robert S. states in his publications that

“Loneliness is a subjective psychological feeling or experience in which an individual lacks satisfactory interpersonal relationships due to a gap between their desired social interaction and the actual level”

(Wang & Zeng, 2024).

“Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), also known as Internet addiction, was first proposed by Goldberg in 1995 (Wang & Zeng, 2024). He argued that Internet addiction, as a coping mechanism, is a way of relieving stress” (Wang & Zeng, 2024).

BMC Public Health published a metaanalysis that sheds light on the relationship between internet addiction and loneliness. Our goal as a campaign is simple: to eliminate stress.
The Study Yue Wang and Youlai Zeng analyzed data across 32 studies discussing a sample of 35,000 participants. Their R value to find a correlation between loneliness and internet addiction was 0.291 which is close to 0 which is ideal and a p value less than 0.001 which is statistically significant compared to the significance value of 0.05. This suggests that individuals experiencing loneliness are more likely to develop problematic internet use, and vice versa (Wang & Zeng, 2024).

Factors Influencing the Correlation Gender, age, geographical region, and educational level were indicated as essential factors that moderate the high strength connection between loneliness and internet addiction (Wang & Zeng, 2024).

  • T=In terms of gender, the correlation was stronger among females and internet addiction and loneliness mainly due to differences in online activities and their social needs. We know that incell communities focus on men’s loneliness, but our campaign wanted to explore the lack of research prevalent on the same issue that female adults face in similar spaces.
  • Seems obvious but adults exhibited a higher association between loneliness and internet addiction compared to adolescents which mainly can be due to different life stressors and coping mechanisms.
  • University students showed a stronger link with internet addiction and loneliness compared to primary and secondary school students. University students are on a search for identity and their new relationships which can trigger dependence on social media and ultimate loneliness.
  • Certain regions showed stronger correlations with loneliness, possibly due to urban versus more isolated areas, and possibly influenced by cultural, social, and regulatory factors.

Personally, I feel that these findings underscore the importance of addressing loneliness as a factor in internet addiction that has become very prevalent very recently. Interventions towards internet addiction and the loneliness it causes should consider narrating a negative association with the internet, possibly a ban or restriction on the internet as per region, and stress coping mechanisms to be advertised that combat loneliness and over-scrolling.

  • Promoting offline social interactions and community engagement as a form of positive reinforcement and positive self growth.
  • Implementing educational programs that foster healthy internet use habits such as a balance of social media use and how to stop procrastination as well as over consumption of media.
  • Providing support systems for individuals at higher risk, such as university students and adults experiencing loneliness.
  • A safe outlet that assists students to vent their concerns and their feelings about the internet.

The intertwined nature of loneliness and internet addiction must be explored, emphasizing the need for comprehensive approaches to address these issues.
